On August 22, 2008, the Ruszczynski’s apartment was destroyed by a devastating fire. It took more than 140 firefighters nearly 90 minutes to gain control of the blaze. The family had no renter’s insurance and lost almost all of their belongings. The Red Cross has since declared their apartment uninhabitable, and the FDNY has considered the fire suspicious.
